Mattie Gould Threat

Mrs. Mattie Threat, age 82, was born May 18, 1941, in Natchitoches, Louisiana to the late Mrs. Bessie Taylor and Mr. David Remo. She was preceded in death by her husband, Beaufurs Threat; six sisters, Elizabeth McHenry, Lizette Hamilton, Gloria Sampson, Frances Johnson, Bessie Johnson, and Luvada Wright; three brothers, Levy Remo, James Toussaint, and Floyd Remo.

She departed this life on Tuesday, January 5th, 2024, at Tranquility Hospice Care in Austell, Georgia.

Mattie Threat attended St. Matthew High School in Melrose, Louisiana (Cane River) and graduated in 1960, then went on to receive her Cosmetologist Licensed in the early 1960s, being the first black woman to be licensed in the state of Alabama. She continued to do hair for the next 60 years.  Mattie opened her own shop called The Hairum in Downtown Enterprise, Alabama in 1984.

Mattie was devoted to her customers, and they were considered family to her. Mattie wasn't your ordinary beautician, she often gave an ear to listen, laughed, and cried with them. Mattie would often arrange to pick her customers up from their home, when they weren’t able to get there on their own.

When any of her customers passed, she would do their hair and makeup before they went to see their Heavenly Father. It wasn't just pride, it was love.

Mom always made sure we had what we needed and some of what we wanted. Mom’s love for people was taught to us early in life, by her sharing the love she had for us with our friends, neighbors and strangers that needed a hand up when they were down and out. Many people have a story to tell of how Mattie impacted their lives and would say if it wasn't for her extended love, they don’t know where they would be today.

Mom attended the TCL Ministries (The Church of Level Planes) and was an active member of the church.

Mattie loved doing many things, such as being outdoors, gardening, just taking in God’s beautiful country, visiting historic sites, and traveling the world. Mom truly enjoyed being the choir director and would often go with other church members to sing at the nursing home.

Mattie leaves the following family members to cherish her loving memories: Sister, Angie Robinson of Cypress, Louisiana; Son, Albert Threat (Lydia Threat) of Hinesville, Georgia; Granddaughters, Kristie Threat, Cyrenthia Threat, Rachel Witherspoon and Ashley Jackson; Grandsons, Albert Threat Jr., Daren Jackson Jr., and Son, Beaufurs S. Threat (Maryann Threat) of Enterprise, Alabama; Granddaughter, Kyn-Yari Threat; Grandson, Joseph Bellos; Daughter, Acquelyn Head (Travis Head) of Powder Springs, Georgia; Grandsons, David Head and Travis Head II; and a host of Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces, Nephews, relatives and friends.
