Margaret Kasujja

November 30, 1940 — May 1, 2020

Akiiki Margaret Kasujja was born on November 30, 1940. A grand-child of the King (Omukama Oyo Kyebambe). Her parents were Keith Musuuga and Thedora Kagoro. She grew up in the palace at Rwengoma, a suburb of Fort Portal, in the western part of Uganda. Akiiki moved to Kampala to go to Boarding School at Namagunga. She trained as a nurse and had her first child, Grace before she met her husband, the late Eng. John B. Kasujja.
Together they raised six children, Sheila, David, Douglas, Barbara, Matthew and James.

Tragedy struck in 1979 when her husband was arrested and we never saw him again. Akiiki became a born-again christian in 1989 and her faith in Jesus and spiritual growth continued until the time of her death. Akiiki was a very proud mother-in-law to Rhoda, Irene, Andrew Bukuru, Julie, and Agnes. Akiiki loved and was devoted to her 13 grandchildren who today live in five countries on three different continents.

In the summer of 2014, Akiiki survived a car accident in Atlanta (together with her daughter-in-law and grandson), she nursed several fractures and slowly eased back to health and full mobility.
Shortly after that she was diagnosed with dementia at the beginning of 2016. Her family and friends continued to support her and follow her this phase of her journey.

On April 2, 2020 Akiiki was very weak and was hospitalized. After tests were taken, the family was informed that she had metastatic cancer. The CT Scan showed images of tumors indicating the cancer had spread from her neck, down her spinal cord and there were traces in her hip. To say we were shocked is an understatement. Not only were there no obvious symptoms that we were aware of, but Akiiki had masked any pain and discomfort. Further tests in the middle of April revealed the cancer to be multiple myeloma.

She walked through life with courage, an inner strength, and a large infectious smile.

At 9:09 pm Eastern Standard Time, on a quiet and warm spring evening, Akiiki breathed her last breath in the down-stairs guest room in Atlanta. She was surrounded with love and support from family and friends. She transitioned calmly and peacefully. We rejoice that she is in a better place and that her pain and suffering has ceased. We believe she is now in the presence of her savior Jesus whom she loved and adored.

As a family, we will miss her more than words can express, but are thankful she is no longer in pain or suffering.

We would like to thank Marie Stein, who was her nurse over the last few months. The communities in Atlanta, in Dallas and Toronto that were 'second' homes to Akiiki.

We'd also like to thank all of those who have contributed mabugo to help the family during this time.
