Leonard Gerald Etheridge, 90, of Austell, Georgia, formerly of Satsuma, Alabama, passed away on October 7, 2026.
Born November 27, 1935, in Mobile County, Alabama, Gerald was the son of the late Joseph Leonard Etheridge and Lessie Marie Patrick Etheridge. He graduated from Murphy High School in 1955 and later attended the University of South Alabama.
On September 2, 1955, Gerald married the love of his life, Sylvia Jean Bartlett. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, family, and devotion to one another over more than 71 years of marriage.
Gerald proudly served in the Alabama Army National Guard, attaining the rank of staff sergeant, and was activated for duty during the Korean conflict. He later enjoyed a successful 31-year career with Scott Paper Company, where his dedication and hard work led to his position as senior woods accountant. He retired in 1994.
A man of strong faith and a commitment to service, Gerald remained actively involved in his local churches throughout his life. He also generously served his community as a member of the Saraland Recreational Board, the Satsuma Planning Board, and treasurer of Vaughan's Palisades Homeowners Association.
Gerald had a special gift for connecting with people. Conversations sparked by a shared interest or chance encounter often grew into lasting friendships that he cherished. Through his work, community involvement, neighborhood, and Presbyterian Village, he built a wide circle of friends who played an important part of his life. The outpouring of calls and messages following his passing was a moving testament to the many people who knew him, valued his friendship, and will miss him.
Gerald enjoyed fishing, hunting, and especially golf during his retirement years. Above all, he treasured his family. He especially enjoyed family vacations on Bon Secour Bay and all over the Gulf Coast, where generations gathered to make lasting memories.
Affectionately known as "Poppaw" to his grandchildren and "Bubba" to his siblings, Gerald will be remembered for his kindness, quiet strength, and unconditional love. His family describes him as one of the finest men they have ever known-a devoted husband, loving and supportive father and father-in-law, cherished grandfather, and beloved brother.
Gerald is survived by his wife of 71 years, Sylvia Jean Etheridge; his sons, David Etheridge (Jan) and Darold Etheridge (Pam); his grandchildren, Kyle Etheridge (Kaileigh) and Kevin Etheridge (Sydney); and his great-grandchildren, Everett and Harper Etheridge.
He is also survived by his siblings, Nelline Brantley, Emma Jean Duvall, and Ken Etheridge, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
A graveside service will be held at 11am (Central) on Thursday, October 22, 2026, at the Bermuda United Methodist Church Cemetery in Monroeville, AL.
