Joycelyn was born on February 10, 1954, in Kingston, Jamaica, to Levi McDermott and Beatrice Silvera. From the moment she entered the world, her vibrant spirit shined brightly. She was known for her caring heart, generous nature, and her genuine love for helping others.

In her early teenage years, Joycelyn welcomed her first daughter, Sharon, followed by Eulene and Sandy.

Determined to create a better life for herself and her three daughters, Joycelyn courageously migrated first to Canada and later to the United States. She worked tirelessly, using her remarkable skills as a cook to provide for her family. Through every challenge, she persevered with strength, faith in God, and unwavering determination, never allowing difficult times to define her spirit or to deter her from succeeding in meeting her goals.

Over the years, her family grew, and she was blessed to become a grandmother to ten grandchildren and a great-grandmother to four great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved deeply and unconditionally.

In addition to her devotion to family, Joycelyn had a passion for cooking and baking her homemade rum cakes were legendary! A sweet symbol of the love she poured into everything she did. Her legacy of compassion and service will continue through the Joycelyn House Foundation, established in her honor by her daughter Sharon, to help mothers and children and to carry forward her generous spirit.

Joycelyn was preceded in death by her parents, Levi McDermott and Beatrice Silvera, as well as sisters Miriam Broomfield, Ivey McDermott and Brothers Bommie and Roy
