  John Gay Bentley, Jr., a devoted family man, dedicated public servant, and respected community member, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2026. Born on May 7, 1943, in Cadiz, Kentucky, John lived a full and impactful life marked by commitment, hard work, and a deep love of the outdoors.

  John began his distinguished career serving as a Metropolitan police officer in Washington, DC, where he exemplified integrity and service to his community. After his tenure in law enforcement, he transitioned into the retail industry, dedicating many years as a meat cutter, meat department manager, and store manager for esteemed grocery chains including Kroger Co. in West Virginia, and Ingles and Publix in Georgia. John retired in 2011, concluding a career characterized by leadership, professionalism, and a strong work ethic.

  A proud member of the Fellowship County Line Men's Group, John also held membership with the Masonic Lodge #153 in Charleston, West Virginia, reflecting his commitment to brotherhood and community engagement. As an avid hunter and fisherman, John found great joy and solace in the outdoors. His passion extended into competitive sports, where he took part in Benchrest Target Rifle competitions in West Virginia and Ohio, showcasing his skill and dedication.

  In 1988, John relocated from Charleston, West Virginia, making his home in Kennesaw, Georgia, where he remained a beloved figure in the community for 38 years. His connection to the area was strong, and his spirit enriched the lives of those around him.

  John is lovingly survived by his wife, Deborah A. Bentley; his children, Mitzi Ann Cochran of Crestview, Florida, John G. Bentley, III of Clarksburg, West Virginia, and Megan B. Eubanks of Kennesaw, Georgia; and his brother Willis B. Bentley of Buckhannon, West Virginia. He is also remembered fondly by his sister Paulette S. Callahan of Crestview, Florida.

  His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Holly Lynn Woods of Pace, Florida; Jeremy D. Cochran of Crestview, Florida; Chelsie D. Bentley of Bridgeport, West Virginia; Travis R. Bentley of Clarksburg, West Virginia; Hannah B. Eubanks and Logan J. Eubanks, both of Kennesaw, Georgia; and step-grandson Adam V. Zeller of Kennesaw, Georgia. John’s great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren include Isabella G. Mayle of Bridgeport, West Virginia; Jordan D. Cochran of Crestview, Florida; Jurnie A. Bentley of Clarksburg, West Virginia; Chloe M. Riffle of Bridgeport, West Virginia; Willow G. Zeller and Axelson M. Zeller, both of Kennesaw, Georgia.

  John was preceded in death by his parents, John G. Bentley, Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Bentley-Sigley, whom he honored throughout his life. 

  A celebration of John’s life will be held on May 7, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 6:00 PM at The Fellowship At County Line, located at 1183 County Line Rd NW, Acworth, Georgia. This gathering will provide an opportunity for family, friends, and community members to remember and honor a man whose life was marked by service, dedication, and love. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to The Fellowship of County Line Men’s Group, 1183 County Line Rd NW, Acworth, GA 30101.

  John Gay Bentley, Jr.’s memory endures in the hearts of those who knew him—a steadfast husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and community pillar. His contributions, love of family, and passion for life will long be treasured and remembered with respect and admiration.
