James Prewett, Sr., affectionately known as "Tom," passed away on January 13, 2026, in Kennesaw, Georgia, at the age of 83. Born on August 12, 1942, in Cedartown, Georgia, Tom dedicated his life to his family and his faith.
After graduating from Cedartown High School in 1960, he served his country honorably in the United States Army Medical Corps as a Private First Class E-3. Tom went on to lead a successful career with the U.S. Postal Service, where he served for an impressive 36 years. He retired as a postal clerk, holding his last position as Dead Letter Coordinator, a role that required great attention to detail and dedication.
Tom was a kind and welcoming soul, with a steadfast faith that underscored his approach to life. He was a man of rich personality and delightful humor, known for his clever quips that could easily bring laughter to those around him. Tom was happily married to his beloved wife, Gay Prewett, for 59 wonderful years. Together, they built a loving family, which he cherished deeply, enjoying an active role in the lives of his children, Deanna and Jay. He also took immense joy in his role as a grandfather to Chelsea and Mark and as a great-grandfather to Noah.
A creative individual, Tom expressed his artistic side through oil painting, capturing cityscapes, landscapes, and portraits that adorn the walls of his home and those of his loved ones. In addition to painting, he enjoyed playing the guitar, woodworking, and had a passion for vintage cars. His love for the arts extended to his appreciation for films, reveling in watching new movies across various genres. Tom also enjoyed traveling with his wife, Gay, all over the world. Together, they traveled to twenty countries.
Tom was an active member of Kellogg Creek Church of Christ. His unwavering faith was a cornerstone of his character.
He is survived by his loving wife Gay Prewett; his beloved children, Deanna and Terry Hight and Jay and Kelli Prewett; his grandchildren, Chelsea and Mark Cline; and his great-grandson, Noah Cline. Additionally, he is survived by his siblings Gary Prewett, Sandra Russell, and Greg Prewett.
Tom will be remembered fondly for the many lives he touched with his kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family. His parents, Elmer Prewett and Annie Wilson, along with his stepbrother Randy Thompson, predeceased him.
A visitation in honor of James Prewett, Sr., will be held on January 21, 2026, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a memorial service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory, located at 2480 Macland Rd SW, Marietta, GA 30064.
Tom Prewett's legacy will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
