Herbert Eugene Smith

Herbert Eugene Smith, affectionately known as Gene, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on January 4, 2026, at the age of 79, in Marietta, Georgia. Born on May 9, 1946, in Citronelle, Alabama, Herbert lived a life filled with love, laughter, and deep devotion to his family.

Shortly after his birth, Herbert’s family relocated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he spent many years before eventually settling in Marietta, Georgia, where he later retired.

Herbert was a loving and devoted father who instilled in his children the importance of hard work and responsibility. Known for his vibrant presence, he was always prepared with a joke or two to brighten any room. He loved his family fiercely and stood as a strong, dependable figure during times of need.

Herbert’s legacy lives on through the lives he shaped and the family he adored. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

Herbert leaves to cherish his memory his brother-in-law, Arthur “Sonny” James; his children, David (Tiffany) Stadler of Woodruff, South Carolina; Eugene (Latonya) Stadler of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Reginald Smith of Marietta, Georgia; Sarita Smith of Powder Springs, Georgia; and Allyce Smith of Marietta, Georgia; his stepchildren, Tracy (Kevin) McLees of Viroqua, Wisconsin; Jessica Ott of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; his grandchildren; Aaron, Renee, Malcolm, Savion, Zy’keria, Eugene, Devonna, Ciarra, Laren, Tierra, Vaughn, Chadisia, Aaliyah, Julian, and Bella.

Herbert also leaves to cherish his memory his nieces and nephews, Kimberly James (Nathaniel) Jones, Nicole (Curtis) Blair, Daphne Watts, and Alvin James, with whom he shared a special bond of love and guidance.

He is also survived by a host of other relatives and dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert Smith and Alice Henry; his loving wife, Sally Tracy-Smith; his beloved sister, Juanita James; and his loyal friend, Gregory Brent.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., with a service immediately following.
