Gwendolyn 'Faye' Grindley passed away peacefully on July 20, 2025 at the age of 84, following a battle with heart failure. During her last week of life she was surrounded by family and friends and spoke of her excitement to meet Jesus.
Born in Christiansburg, Virginia, to Cleddie and Nellie Phillips, Faye was the youngest of three girls. Her love of flowers and all things outdoors grew as she helped manage the town store and their large family farm.
Hospitalized for rheumatic fever at age 11, Faye was told she would likely never be strong enough to bear children or live to an old age. But her faith held strong and she defied the odds, eventually leaving home to attend David Lipscomb College, where she met and married the love of her life, George Grindley, Sr.
Whether living in Nashville, planting a church in New Jersey, or moving back to the South, close to Atlanta, the couple remained active in church, volunteering in various ways. Their mutual faith sustained Faye when George died unexpectedly after a knee surgery, leaving her a 36 year-old widow with two boys. Faye believed that God would be a husband to her as she read in Scripture and would tell countless stories throughout her life of His faithfulness to her in helping with everyday needs and raising her sons with joy.
While her faith kept her strong, Faye remained proud of her sharp-shooting skills; maintained a motorcycle license; and was drawn to hard work, especially outdoors. Even in her 80's you could find her on a ladder or wielding a chain saw. Faye was frugal so that she could be generous in giving of both her finances and her time, always loving to give in unexpected ways. She volunteered at the Cobb County Women's Shelter and babysat grandchildren, even teaching some of them to drive.
As health challenges made it difficult for her to leave her home, she stayed in touch with friends and family via phone and Zoom calls, often pointing them to Jesus. Jesus was truly her best friend and companion and she was quick to speak of His faithfulness to her in nearly every conversation.
Faye is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-love, George Howell 'Chip', Jr. married to Laura, and Glen Scott married to Melani, as well as six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Her Celebration of Life Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, July 26th at 11 am at West Cobb Funeral Home (2480 Macland Road, Marietta, GA 30064), with visitation starting at 9:30 am. In honor of Faye's love for bright colors and flowers, you're invited to wear yellow or "happy colors" to celebrate her life.
