Charles Kenneth "Ken" Scroggins

December 14, 1925 — September 10, 2023

Charles Kenneth Scroggins, age 97, passed away peacefully and entered his heavenly home with his Lord on Sunday, September 10, 2023, in Marietta Georgia surrounded by his loving family.

Ken was born December 14, 1925, in Jefferson County Kentucky to Garnett Franklin Scroggins and Mary Martin Scroggins. He graduated from DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, served in the United States Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet during World War II, and later, attended the University of Kentucky.

Ken graduated in 1951 from the College of Commerce where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a proud member and served as President of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. After completing his degree, Ken went to work for Fireman's Fund Insurance Company in Louisville Kentucky.

He married Gleta Gilbert in Louisville on October 18, 1958. They started their family in Louisville with the birth of their only child, Suzanne. The family lived in numerous places throughout his career, moving first to Cleveland, Ohio and then to Cincinnati, Ohio. He then accepted a managing partnership at Purdy and Cook Insurance Company in Lexington Kentucky where he had a very successful and fulfilling career of 33 years, finally retiring in 2002.

Ken and Gleta's marriage ended in divorce in 1979 and he later met and married Jane Cowan Patton on June 13, 1981, in Lexington Kentucky. Ken and Jane started their life together in Lexington, briefly living in Georgetown Kentucky before finally settling down in Versailles Kentucky in 1991, where they resided until November 2022.

As an enthusiastic and dedicated University of Kentucky and Phi Delta Theta alumnus, Ken served as a Chapter Advisor to the fraternity for 10 years. He loved all sports; but none more so than his beloved Wildcats basketball team with unwavering devotion.

Ken served as a Deacon at Crestwood Christian Church in Lexington and eventually attended Troy Presbyterian Church in Versailles where he sang in the choir for many years.

He enjoyed woodworking and carpentry, but his true passion was being outdoors. Whether it was playing golf, enjoying long weekends on Lake Cumberland or peaceful quiet evenings on his front porch. Ken was an avid gardener spending as much time as possible in his garden. However, he was never happier than when he was home with his family. He loved recounting stories from his life with great wit, humor, and wisdom.

Even at 97 years young, Ken remained the consummate gentleman always opening and holding doors open for anyone that came into his path. He as a gracious, kind-hearted, compassionate, and charismatic individual who was a great friend to all that knew and admired him. But most of all, he was truly a very loving, nurturing, and devoted father and husband.

In addition to his wife Jane of 42 years, Ken leaves his daughter, Suzanne, and her fiancé, Richard Stark of Mableton, Georgia. Stepson Jay Patton and his wife, Nancy Patton of Marietta Georgia; step grandchildren Savannah Patton of Cincinnati Ohio; Spencer Patton and Chandler Patton both of Marietta Georgia; a stepdaughter Dana Patton of Sarasota Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, stepfather Kenneth Scoggan, sister Jeanne, brothers Bill, Shag, Frank, and his step-siblings Kenny, Martha, Margaret, and John. As well as numerous friends and colleagues, and finally his beloved cat, Maggie.

The family would like to thank the staff at Brickmont Senior Living in Marietta, Georgia, as well as Trinity Hospice for the genuine, dedication and compassion given to Ken during his time in their care. He was loved by all and will be sincerely missed by those whose lives he touched.

A celebration of life service will take place on a date yet to be determined in Versailles Kentucky. Memorial gifts may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation or the American Cancer Society.
