Michael Luttrell Sr.

May 15, 1945 — August 28, 2018

Michael Edward Luttrell, Sr., age 73, of Atlanta, Georgia passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2018. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, August 31, 2018 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta with Rev. Keith Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Atlanta.

Born in Columbus, GA, Mr. Luttrell graduated from Warner Robbins High School where he held the position of half back for his football team. He entered every game with the confidence of the most valuable player and hit the field with an agility surpassed by no other. His athletic talents didn’t stop there. With forearms that would make Popeye jealous and hands that could hold the earth, Mr. Luttrell’s talents were also utilized by the basketball, baseball, and track teams.

He lived in Atlanta for the past 46 years, and retired from Thomas Concrete Ben Hill Ready Mix as a Senior Quality Control and Plant Manager and was a member of Floyd Road Baptist Church.

A man of few words but a heart big enough to fill an ocean, he cherished his one biological son and two brothers but was seen as a father and brother to many. His eyes could eclipse the sun whenever he smiled and his silent belly laugh brought so much joy that it sounded like thunder in everyone’s hearts. Remarkable for a man who endured so much physical and emotional pain throughout his life. He joked that he was the graduate of SHK, the “School of Hard Knocks.” He was known for many by his “Mikeisms” and gestures that illustrated the same. They sounded like life lessons packaged in a simple southern Haiku. The last one he told his beloved wife was, “If the mountain weren’t rough, you couldn’t climb it and get over it.” With God’s choice to reclaim our guardian angel on earth back to heaven, He delivered us a mighty tough mountain to climb. The one solace we have is knowing that we know for sure that Mr. Luttrell can hear God clearly now that all his emotional noise is gone. He is free. God stamped a smile on his face on his quiet body as validation that his battered heart is now at peace.

In the words of his only granddaughter, whom he adored so much and whose videos he’d watch before bed and to whom he’d offer a lengthy prayer of protection every night, “Papa, thank you for all the tricks you showed me, all the laughs, the love, and the joy you brought us.”
