Marie Harden

July 8, 1925 — July 21, 2014

Marie Cooper Harden, 89, of Marietta. Marie was born July 8, 1925 in Columbus, Georgia, and was released from her earthly cares on Monday, July 21st. She was married on June 8th, 1942, just before her seventeenth birthday, as her husband, Max, was about to head overseas with the Marines. They were married until his death in 1979. Marie and Max lived for years in Vinings, where Marie was very involved in civic activities. She was active with the Girl Scouts, served as President of Teasley Elementary PTA, was one of the founding members of the Vinings Pacemakers, and was an officer in the Vinings Civic Club. She worked in a variety of positions and companies, including RC Cola, Georgia Tech, Pulte Homes, Davison’s Department Store and Southeast Regional Education Board. Marie was an avid bridge player, accomplished hostess, and had impeccable taste in fashion and home décor. In 1999, she purchased and restored The Elms in Columbus, Georgia. She loved gardening, her pets and shopping --- and never saw a bargain she could resist. An avid sports fan, she adored Georgia Tech football and her beloved Atlanta Braves. Marie was always concerned about social justice, and was never afraid to speak her mind. She is survived by her daughter, Melissa Austin of Columbus, her daughter Cindy Harden and son-in-law, Donald Bussolini, of New York City, her son Wes Harden and daughter-in-law, Retha, of Marietta. She was particularly proud of her three grandsons, David and Jacob Harden, and Christopher Bussolini. For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Atlanta Humane Society. A private service will be held on Friday, July 25th. Online Guestbook www.westcobbfuneralhome.com .
