Julia Harriette Cannon Tate

May 10, 1942 — December 31, 2018

Julia "Harriette" Cannon Tate, age 76, of Marietta passed away the evening of December 31, 2018 after an extended illness at Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. A funeral service will be held on Sunday January 6, 2019 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the West Cobb Funeral Home, 2480 Macland Road, Marietta, with Dr. Robin Lindsey officiating. Interment will be at the Cheatham Hill Cemetery on Dallas Highway in Marietta. Harriette was born and raised in Toccoa, Georgia, the middle child and only daughter of Julian and Maude Cannon who both predeceased her. After graduation from Stephens County High School in 1960, Harriette moved to Atlanta to pursue a career and would work for both Liberty Mutual and Fireman's Fund insurance companies in underwriting. Harriette attended Piedmont College and the Art Institute of Atlanta. Harriette would meet her future husband, Leroy Tate Jr., who had arrived in Atlanta in the fall of 1960 from western Tennessee to attend Georgia Tech. GO JACKETS!! They were married in September 1964, and in 1966 after their first of three boys was born, Harriette decided to become a homemaker and raise their children while Leroy pursued a lifelong career at Lockheed Aircraft Corporation as an electrical engineer. They would eventually settle in the brand new Hollydale Subdivision on Fern Valley Drive off Powder Springs Road and raise their family, and were one of the first homeowners in the development in what was then rural south Cobb County. In the summer of 1989 Harriette and Leroy temporarily moved to Lancaster, California for just over a year as Lockheed Aircraft took them there, but they returned to Marietta at Lockheed's directive. Harriette loved raising several cats over the years, and enjoyed feeding the birds at her homes and especially liked Cardinal birds. Harriette was an accomplished piano and organ player and often played for Church services at Hollydale Methodist Church in Marietta where the family was charter members, and later at McEachern Memorial Methodist Church in Powder Springs where she was a member. Even in the final year of her life Harriette could still play the piano with ease, and would often do so without the aid of music even though her memory was failing. In her youth Harriette also enjoyed painting and won several local awards for her works. Harriette is predeceased by her husband Leroy whom she was married to for 36 years, and leaves behind her oldest son Joseph Alan (Ann) Tate of Powder Springs, her middle son James Brian (Katharine) Tate of Marietta, and her youngest son Christopher Lee (Karen) Tate of Elijay, Georgia. Also surviving are brothers Roger (Judy) Cannon of Toccoa, Georgia and Richard Cannon of Commerce, Georgia, and five grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, Harriette requests donations be made to The United Methodist Children's Home (404-327-5820) in her memory, 1967 Lakeside Pkwy #400, Tucker, Georgia 30084. The family will receive friends on Saturday January 5th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. An online guest book is available at www.westcobbfuneralhome.com .
