James Edward Allen

December 19, 1937 — March 27, 2017

Celebration of a wonderful life well lived - James Edward Allen
James (Jim) Allen passed gently on March 27th, 2017 after a brief illness. Jim was born in Anadarko, Oklahoma on December 19th, 1937 and grew up in Nocona Texas (the Promised Land).. Texas was always the home of his heart. It was the perfect environment for a strong, adventurous cowboy and devoted Christian. It was Jim's final wish that we return him to his home and friends in Nocona.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved parents Ray and Marie Allen, his wife of more than 30 years Frances, his son Christopher and several wonderful friends and colleagues. He is survived by his dear sister Susan and niece PJ of Salida, Colorado, his beloved son Clark and daughter-in-law Abigail, his grandchildren, Maxwell, Leanna, Robert and Ronnie Allen. In addition, he will be treasured and missed by his friend and partner Lisa Ostman, his stepdaughter Meghan McNeal, his son-in-law Marc McNeal and his precious grandchild Shyyler McNeal, and all of his dear friends who loved him.
Jim believed in paying for the privilege of living in this great country through service. He was a consistent volunteer for several organizations including the Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity. His career was focused in non-profits. He worked for The American Heart Association for more than 30 years, "retiring" as the Executive Director of the Georgia Affiliate. He then began his second career as Director for Planned Giving at The American Red Cross. His passion for the mission and work of both of these organizations earned him continuous recognition.
Jim was an avid sportsman all his life. His passion was fishing and he recently celebrated his 30th anniversary with the Marietta Bass Masters. He joined the club in January of 1987. He served as the Club's secretary, recording the minutes for the majority of the thirty years.
In addition, he was a devoted and active member of First United Methodist Church in Marietta, Georgia for more than thirty years and was deeply committed to the church's mission. He loved his Sunday class and found deep inspiration and support from his church family. He was a regular volunteer in the church's outreach programs to support the community. He was particularly fond of the annual programs to provide trees and gifts to local families at Christmas, the annual backpack drives for children, and Habitat for Humanity projects.
We will gather together to celebrate Jim on April 8th at 11:00 at First United Methodist Church in Marietta. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a donation to their favorite charity in honor of Jim.
