Hewell Windham

April 11, 1934 — July 26, 2022

Hewell Anderson Windham was born in Chattanooga, TN, on April 11, 1934, to Roy Paul Windham and Hazel Hobbs Windham. He grew up as the eldest of six children. In 1949, he entered the Air Force and served in Germany. After completing his years of service, he returned to America and met Hazel Plunkett, the love of his life, at church in Atlanta, GA. There he professed faith in Jesus Christ and was baptized at the age of 21. He married Hazel in 1956 and had a wonderful marriage of 66 years.

Hewell completed several college courses at Georgia State and Georgia Tech universities, while working for Lockheed Aircraft. He began working for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1961. His career with the prison system took them to Dallas, TX, and to Kansas City, MO, before retiring to Douglasville, GA, in 1984. Hewell (also called "Windy") was active in the Federal Prison Retirees Association, serving as the president of the Atlanta chapter and attending over 20 annual national conventions.

He was an avid golfer and golf fan, starting as a caddy at age 11 and eventually becoming the president of the Atlanta Senior Golfers' Association. He and Hazel went on over 20 golf trips, as well as on nine cruises and on many beach and mountain vacations.

Hewell loved his family dearly and cherished his roles as Daddy and Paw. He is survived by his loving wife Hazel Alice Plunkett Windham, by daughters Kay (Hal) Cole and Karen (Jerry) Flowers, and by grandchildren Mollie (Matt) Snow, Matthew (Caitlin) Cole, Julie (Zach) Miller, and Jamie (Caleb) Terry. He was also blessed to know six great-grandchildren including Joshua, Lila, and Noah Snow; Hallie Miller, Jackson Cole, and Fletcher Terry. He is survived by two brothers Raymond (Barbara) Windham and Alan (Zenaida) Windham and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents and by siblings Margaret Mitchell, Roy Windham, Jr., and Vivian Thomas.
