David Hendrix

March 7, 1947 — February 27, 2019

David "Tommy" Hendrix was born on March 7th, 1947 to Rev. Homer and Alma Ruth Hendrix. On Wednesday, February 27th of 2019, David "Tommy" Hendrix went to be with our Lord. Memorial Service will be held at 5:00 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta, GA.

He was husband to Tracy of 42 years, father to 7 children: Candice Christine Campbell of Henryville, IN, David Courtney Hendrix of Elizabeth, IN, Carry Lamar Hendrix of Salem, IN, Jayne Catherine Craig of Marietta, GA, Anastasia Christina Schwartz of Marietta, GA, Shawn Christopher Hendrix of West Palm Beach, FL and David Scott Hendrix of Marietta, GA, 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He also left behind 4 surviving siblings: Wanda June Phillips of Canton, GA, Kathy Sue Fortner of Ball Ground, GA, Randy Joe Hendrix of Canton, GA and Karyn Carmichael of Woodstock, GA.

David loved playing golf, fishing, cutting his grass, traveling, and spending time with his family. He took pride in his work as a cabinet maker and supervisor at DM Manufacturing, where he worked for the last 19 years. He would often say that we did the inside of this restaurant or that one. He cared deeply for the men and women he worked with and spoke highly of each of them. Although he had only 7 children, he took many under his wing and treated people as though they were his.

David never met a stranger and had a unique ability of making everyone he met feel loved, cared for, and valued. We often joked that he was a magnet for children and animals. Undoubtedly, it was his meek, calm and gentle spirit that drew people in. Rarely did he raise his voice or speak a cross word. No one could deny his kindness.

Over the past several years David struggled with heart issues, and when he was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 he continued to maintain a positive attitude. He would tell his children and grandchildren "I'll be better soon and I'm going to get outside and mow my grass because the yard has to look good", or he'd say, "we need to get out on the golf course as soon as I feel better." He was so sweet and blindly optimistic.

There is no doubt that he left a legacy. He never experienced financial wealth, but something greater…he displayed a Christlike life that taught his children and grandchildren how to love and to be loved. He loved his wife well. Up until the end he said, "I'm fine as long as Maw is here next to me."

David was a man of great integrity and worked hard his whole life to support his family. Knowing David, it was obvious he valued family greatly. He did it with joy and with a smile on his face. Although quiet, his character screamed an honorable, kind, gentle, beautifully meek man. He will be missed by his family and friends greatly. He was our stable rock. Farewell until we meet again.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 4:00 pm until 5:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta.
