Carmen Lolita Edwards

November 29, 1923 — October 20, 2013

Carmen L. Edwards, nee Locke, affectionately known as Moms, Mommy or Gong Gong was born on November 29, 1923 to the late Luther M. Locke and Lillian L. Locke in Spanish Honduras. Her father was a chef on a merchant marine ship that travelled the world and subsequently took his wife on many trips and it was on one of these trips that moms made her glorious entrance into the world.

Carmen was the third of four children, an only girl with three brothers and so she was truly the apple of her dad’s eyes. Moms spent the formative years of her life in Savanna-la-mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, West Indies. Following the death of her parents, a young moms and her siblings moved to Kingston where she attended St. Hughes High School. After graduating in 1941, she met and later married her soul-mate and the love of her life, Woodrow Samuel Edwards. This Godly union produced six children, 5 boys and 1 girl.

In the late 1960’s moms emigrated to the U.S. and was soon joined by her family for a chance at a new life. Moms, Mommy, Gong Gong, Carmen was a realist. Her main focus in life was God and family. She was strongly opinionated, free spirited and a fiercely independent woman of God. She was always there when needed, ever so willing to give what little she had. She accepted the good and bad in people, always giving others the benefit of the doubt. Her great wisdom kept us from going astray or from walking away from the principles of God and family. Carmen and Woodrow, were our “Rock of Gibraltar”, the ones we all turned to for solace when the chips were down. Her grace and warm smile touched the hearts of all who knew her or came in contact with her.

Carmen L. Edwards, moms, mommy, Gong Gong, you will be missed but not forgotten. You will always be in our hearts and minds. You have touched children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, friends and family. Your great love for God and family, your disarming smile and your quiet strength will never be forgotten. Your memories will help us in our times of need and you will continue to be a source of strength and inspiration throughout our lives.

Most assuredly we will always remember your most profound saying when life’s road became rocky, “While you can prevent somethings from happening, if it is God’s will, then such is the way of life”.

May God bless and keep your soul safe and may you forever sit with Him at the conference table.

Rest in Peace Moms.
