Bernard R. Betten

July 23, 1941 — March 26, 2016

Bernard Roy Betten, Bernie as he was known to friends, was born on July 23, 1941 along with his twin sister, Bernice, to Jack and Minnie Betten in Hampton, IA. Bernard and Sandra Williams were married on October 17th, 1961 in Ackley, Iowa. He worked many years at the state training school for boys in Eldora, IA as a vocational instructor before becoming a commercial electrician and estimator throughout central Iowa. Bernie and Sandi eventually moved to ‘the farm’ in Burlington, Iowa. He enjoyed the years spent on the farm where he had room for his woodworking and his John Deere. He loved when the grandkids would come to the farm, teaching them to ride the John Deere, roasting marshmallows, and showing off his latest project. Eventually the desire to be close to their grandkids had them moving to Georgia.

Bernie and his wife, Sandra have lived in Georgia for the past nine years. They are faithful members of Burnt Hickory Baptist Church. Bernie enjoyed model airplanes, woodworking, cooking, and NASCAR. He loved to cook his famous waffles and homemade pork tenderloins for all his family and friends. He loved to joke and tease his friends. He would always say, ‘you know I love you if I am picking on you.’ Bernie loved his family, but he had two great loves in his life, his wife Sandi and his Jesus. His love for his family, sense of humor, and faith will be greatly missed.
He is preceded in death by his parents; Jack and Minnie Betten; and sister, Necia Vanderwall. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Sandra Lou Betten; his sons John (Lorraine) Betten of Canton, GA, and Jeff Betten of New York, NY; his daughter Janet (Brandon) Gammon of Dallas, GA; 3 sisters: Bernice (Glenn) Verbrugge, Cadillac, MI, Rozann (Ralph) Mueller, Grand Rapids, MI, Ada Castle, Elgin TX; 6 grandchildren: Eric (Brittany) Betten, Calhoun, GA, Alyssa Betten, Athens, GA, Lauren Betten, Canton GA, Jackson, Greyson, and Jennavieve Gammon, Dallas, GA and great-grandchild John Luke Betten.
