Robert Clark Newman

March 25, 1920 — April 26, 2014

Robert (Bob) Clark Newman (94) passed away on April 26, 2014 in Smyrna, Georgia after a long illness. He was born in Jacksonville, FL on March 25, 1920, the second child of Florence Brookins Newman and Harry G. Newman

Bob was a true member of “The Greatest Generation.” He grew up during the depression, fought in Europe during World War II, and completed his education on the GI Bill. Upon his return from Europe he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Pilcher, at his brother Harry’s wedding. They married six months later, as soon as he was discharged, and celebrated 65 wedding anniversaries together before his dear Betty passed in November of 2011.

He graduated from Tulsa High School in Oklahoma, attended Cornell University for two years, then joined the U.S. Army and served as a Sergeant in the 103rd Infantry Division from May, 1943 to February, 1946. After his military service, he attended the University of Oklahoma and then Penn State where he received a PhD in Petroleum Engineering. His goal was to become a professor, but he changed his mind and chose to go into the field as an engineer with Texaco in Venezuela in 1955. He then worked for IBM in Venezuela, Texas, Borneo and New Jersey before retiring in 1978 and moved to Brandon, MS to run his father’s oil business. He loved this work and continued working well into his 80’s.

Bob loved meeting new people and enjoyed learning about other cultures and languages. He often said that he had lived everywhere and enjoyed all the places he lived. An avid lover of music and a talented baritone, he performed in the Caracas Theater Club, his churches, including the Crossgates United Methodist Church Choir in Brandon, and the Mississippi Chorus, of which he was a founding member.

He was truly a happy man, full of joy and loved life. He will be missed by his family and friends who are scattered all over the world.

He is survived by his children: Anita Kay Newman of S. Carver MA, Roger Clarke Newman and wife, Marilyn, of Spring TX, Randolph Eugene Newman and wife, JoAnne, of Smyrna GA; his sister, Eugenia Newman Wilson of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren: Kelly Newman Ivutin (Marietta GA), Richard Newman (Decatur AL), Kristin Newman (Oakland CA), and Clark Newman (Houston TX); four great-grandchildren: Luka, Stefan and Max Ivutin and Logan Newman and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held in Oklahoma City on June 21, 2014 at 10:00 am at the Memorial Park Funeral Home and Cemetery. Donations in Bob’s name will be gratefully accepted by the Mississippi Chorus, P.O. Box 13407, Jackson MS 39236-3407 and the Woodland Ridge Veteran’s Fund, 4005 S. Cobb Drive, Smyrna, GA 30080.
