Dr. Rene Rivera- Santiago M.D.

Dr. Rene Rivera-Santiago, “Rene”, son of the late Asciclo and Matilda Rivera was born May 20, 1937 in Ponce, Puerto Rico. He was a proud US Veteran, awarded a Purple Heart in the Korean conflict. Following his service, he graduated from both Columbia University with a PHD in Biochemistry and a MD from Johns Hopkins University.
In June 1968, Rene was united in holy matrimony to his beautiful wife of nearly 50 years, Ana Maria Rivera-Santiago, who misses him dearly but rejoices in the beautiful family they created together.
For over 40 years Rene loved being a doctor and took joy in helping others in need. His grandchildren were his pride and joy; in 2010 he retired to become an avid grandfather. Rene was a friendly man, whom never met a stranger and had an easy smile that lit up a room. He truly loved life, especially music and dancing. He was a devoted parishioner of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Smyrna, GA and his positive attitude and deep faith in God will forever remain in the memories of all who knew him. He quietly departed this life on Sunday, November 6th, 2016 in Nicosia, Cyprus where he went to have a surgery that he hoped would restore his ability to walk and run around with his grandchildren as he once had.
He will forever be cherished in the lives of his children and grandchildren; he is survived by his daughter Lissette Rivera-Pauley and her sons Franklin Monroe Pauley IV (“Roe”) and Alex Pauley; son Rene Rivera II and his son Rene Felipe Rivera III; daughter Maria del Rosario Rivera and her daughters Gina and Mariela Torres; granddaughter Sarea Rivera Mess and her daughter Ariana Encarnacion; and his Brother Diego Rivera along with a host of devoted nieces, nephews, and friends. Rene will forever be missed.
The family will mourn the loss of Rene in a private closed viewing. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Autism Speaks Atlanta.
