Peter Edmund Simmons

April 5, 1954 — February 4, 2014

Peter Simmons, 59, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on February 4th, 2014, at his home as a result of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), a progression that only lasted just over a year.

He was born to the late Leonard Roy Simmons and Joan Dorothy Simmons on April 5th, 1954, in Frindsbury, Kent, England. Peter married Deborah Lee in 1974 and they moved to the U.S with their young family in 1988.

Husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, friend and colleague, Peter was many things to many people. As an athlete and runner, he competed in his first sprint triathlon in September of 2012 - during the beginning stages of his ALS - and ran the Grand Canyon rim-to-rim-to-rim in 1996 to raise money for an orphanage. He was a sporting clays instructor and helped to organize multiple charity shooting events, benefiting charities like Boy Scouts of America. He was a drummer known as “Pete the Beat” to a generation of church kids who watched him play passionately every Sunday morning. Professionally, he spent a number of years on the Board of the British American Business Group in Atlanta and was a Communications Manager at Lockheed Martin in Marietta where he dearly loved his "babies," otherwise known as the C-130J Super Hercules.

A memorial service will be held at Mount Paran North Church of God on Allgood Road in Marietta on Monday, February 24th at 2 pm. His son has designed a website for those who knew Peter to submit their memories and photographs: http://rememberingpete.org . Visitors to the site can also make donations to ALS TDI in Pete’s honor.

Pete is survived by his wife, Debbie; their three sons: Charles, Philip and Luke; grandson Ben and granddaughters Elisabeth and Chloe. His is also survived by his mother, Joan Adams, and brothers, Roland and Jonathan (Joff).
