Myrna L. Fleeman

November 19, 1935 — July 10, 2017

Myrna grew up in Miami, Florida. During her early years she enjoyed ballet, summer trips to Highlands, NC where she first found her love of horses, golf outings with her father and fun on the beautiful Miami beaches. She attended Miami High School where she was a majorette. After high school, Myrna began her modeling career.
She worked as model for print photos and runway fashion with the Coronet Modeling Agency. She would say that her favorite modeling shoot was on the beach, when she wore a gold lamé bathing suit. Myrna was beautiful then, and beautiful now.
She married Roy C. Fleeman, Jr. in 1956. Her beautiful and elaborate wedding was considered a “high society social event” at the time in Miami. She even modeled her wedding dress and photos were used in wedding magazines.
During her marriage and while living in Miami, she had two children, Roy and Melinda. Her husband Roy was a horse trainer and Myrna loved the opportunity to be involved with the horses. After living in Miami for some time, Roy was offered a job as a horse trainer for a new stable. The family moved to New Jersey where their third daughter Christine was born. It was hard to conform to the cold winters of the north for these “sun birds” of Miami so they moved back down south to Tampa, where Roy became the trainer for the Tampa Yacht Club Stables. Myrna enjoyed a wonderful social life there and began to show The American Saddlebred Horses that Roy trained.
In 1969 the family moved again and settled nicely in Marietta, Georgia and raised their three children. Myrna and Roy divorced many years later and Myrna began a career as a riding instructor. She loved being around the horses and even more so, loved to see her students enjoying them as well. Her focus was Saddle Seat Equitation and she sent a few riders on to become champions in show.
Myrna moved her riding instruction business to Henderson Stables in College Park, Georgia, which was run by Dewey Henderson. Myrna and Dewey became a great team and continued the horse show circuit for many years. As sometimes happens in partnerships, they fell in love and became a pair. Dewey was undoubtedly the love of Myrna’s life.
In 1978 they decided to move away from horse training and teaching. Myrna helped Dewey with his aspiration to build a horse auction facility which became a highly
recognized auction and event venue in Union City, Georgia - Henderson Auction Arena.
In keeping with her love of horses and riding students, Myrna opened her own shop within the facility, Hobby Horse Tack Shop. During this time, Myrna and Dewey
became synonymous with each other and were widely known throughout the horse
industry. They also became active in business and social events in South Fulton County, Georgia where the auction facility was located.
Sadly Dewey succumbed to cancer in 1987. Myrna was heartbroken. Soon after Dewey’s
death, Henderson Auction Arena was sold. She took some time to contemplate her
life and decided to try her hand at real estate. This is where her career really took off. She started small by selling houses with Bob Fuller Real Estate Company. She excelled in her real estate career and became even more well known in the South Fulton area. She was elected president of the South Fulton Chamber of Commerce in 1991. She was
a member of the American Cancer Society as well. Soon Myrna tired of selling houses and turned her attention towards commercial real estate with Metro Brokers. During this time she built a new home and moved to Fayetteville, Georgia. She worked as a premier real estate agent until she retired at the age of 72.
Myrna was active in the Fairburn community. Her church home was the Fairburn
United Methodist Church where she taught sunday school, served on many committees
and helped to organize church social events. She was a volunteer at Cochran Mill
Nature Park. She loved the nature center and enjoyed teaching others about the
animals and natural foliage. Myrna was a part of the “Knit Whits” and knitted shawls which were donated to other organizations to distribute to people who were ill.
She started a book club with friends and developed a nice library in her home. Myrna enjoyed the classics such as the Atlanta Symphony and the Atlanta Opera. There was always beautiful music playing in her home. She loved the outdoors and gardening.
Her gift was with orchids. Friends would bring her their dying orchid plants and she
just had a way of bringing them back to life. She was a “dog person” too and doted
on her precious Jack Russell Terriers. They were her comfort and her companions.
No matter what organization or whom Myrna was with, she always left a lasting
impression of professionalism, kindness and a wealth of knowledge.
Myrna is survived by her three children, Roy C. Fleeman III, Melinda Boteler, and Christine Cobb, husband Tyrus Cobb. She has four grandchildren, Roy C. Fleeman IV, Nick Fleeman, Allison Cobb MacDowall, and Billy Gibson. She has three great
grandchildren, Charlie Mae Fleeman, Finnick Beau Fleeman, and Saylor Elizabeth MacDowall.
