Master Chief Henry L Thorpe

Master Chief Boatswain’s Mate Henry Lee Thorpe, age 67, of Marietta, GA passed away Saturday, January 14, 2017. A Funeral Service will be held at 10am Friday, January 20, 2017 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory in Marietta with Pastor Brent Shoemaker officiating. Burial will be at the Georgia National Cemetery, Canton, GA at 12pm

Master Chief Thorpe was born in Beacon, New York, on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 1949 and enlisted in the Navy on January 30. 1969. He completed recruit training at Naval Training Center Great Lakes, Illinois.
Master Chief Thorpe served aboard the USS MAUNA LOA (AE-8) Bayonne, New Jersey. After completing two overseas tours aboard the USS MAUNA LOA, he transferred to the USS LUSIENO (AFT-156) Newport, Rhode Island. In December 1972, Master Chief Thorpe was released from active duty. He was hired by the Poughkeepsie Police Department, Poughkeepsie, New York.
In April 1973, he joined the Naval Reserves and drilled at the Naval Reserve center in Poughkeepsie. On October 30, 1978, Master Chief Thorpe was recalled to active duty as a canvasser recruiter and was assigned to the Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Washington, DC.
Master Chief Thorpe’s assignments have included: Recruiter in Charge, Naval and Marine Corps Reserve Center, Washington, DC; Recruiter in Charge, Naval Reserve Center, Adelphi, Maryland; Assistant Chief Recruiter, REDCOMREGSIX, Washington, DC; Chief Recruiter, Naval Air Station Atlanta; Senior Trainer and Production Supervisor, Naval Reserve Recruiting Command Detachment Four, Orlando, Florida, and Interim Command Master Chief, Delayed Entry Program Coordinator, Health Benefits Advisor and Total Quality Leadership Advisor, Navy Recruiting District, Atlanta.
Master Chief Thorpe’s personal decorations and awards include the Navy Achievement Medal (three awards), Meritorious Unit Commendation (two awards), Navy Good Conduct Medal (four awards), Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal (two awards), Navy Recruiting Ribbon (five awards), Armed Forces Reserve Medal and 25 Gold Wreath Letters of Commendation for Recruiting Excellence.
Master Chief Thorpe is preceded in death by his father, Chester Lee Thorpe, Sr.
He is survived by:
Children: Ronald Johnson, Shelevia Proctor, James Thorpe, and Tammy Thorpe
Former Wife: Karen Thorpe
Mother: Inez Batten
Siblings: Fred Jackson, Donald Thorpe, Chester Thorpe, William Jackson, Michael Thorpe, Allan Thorpe, Joann Blake, and Sandra Looby
10 Grandchildren, 2 Great Grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 20, 2017 from 9am-10am at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory.
