John Edward Hanten

John Edward Hanten, 71, of Dallas, GA passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2017.
John was born November 24, 1946 in Dubuque, Iowa, the son of Cyril and Carole Hanten. He married Karen Wagner in 1974. They moved to Georgia 26 years ago from California.
He is survived by his wife Karen Hanten, his children, Jonathon (Juliana) Hanten of Marietta, GA, and Kari (Beau) Brannan of Dallas, GA; two grand-daughters, Katelyn and Brooklyn Brannan; five siblings, Mary Kaye Hagar, Richard (Cindy) Hanten, Thomas (Dianne) Hanten, Ronald (Patti) Hanten, and Janice (Mike) DeMoully all of Dubuque, Iowa; good friends Arnie and Diane Freelander; many other extended family members; his fellow Knights of Columbus; and his church family and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law, Phyllis Wagner; brothers-in-law, Darrell Wagner and Ralph Hagar; nephew, Timothy Hanten; and great nephew, Ian Wagner.
A proud veteran, John retired as a Captain from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for 15 years at Lockheed. He was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church where he served in the Knights of Columbus and on the Parish Council.
John was a life-long Green Bay Packers and Braves fan. He was generally seen with a Starbucks cup in his hand. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who loved spending time with his two grand-daughters. He will be greatly missed by all those that knew him.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service at 7:15 p.m., at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory, 2480 Macland Rd., Marietta, GA. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 14, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 87 Lacy St NW, Marietta, GA, with Monsignor John Walsh Officiating. Burial will follow at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton with full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s honor to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society or the American Heart Association.
