Hazelle Higgins Braude

Hazelle Higgins Braude, 100, of Kennesaw passed away Monday, August 11, 2014. Memorial Services will be held 2pm Saturday, August 16, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Marietta with Dr. Sam Matthews and Rev. Brian Smith officiating. Mrs. Braude was a registered nurse, having graduated from the Michael Reese Hospital School of Nursing in Chicago, ILL. She worked at the hospital as a head nurse and supervisor, and retired from the State of Illinois in 1974 as a Medical worker. In Chicago she was an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Hazelle and her husband, Oliver, who preceded her in death, moved to Kennesaw, GA from Illinois in 1977. Hazelle and Oliver quickly became involved not only with family here in Georgia, but in activities and clubs in Kennesaw/Marietta. Hazelle and Oliver were involved in “Y” Full of Fun Folks, a part of the YMCA, Senior Clubs under the sponsorship of Cobb Senior Services. This led to their helping in 1984 to establish ELM (Enrichment of Life Movement), and participated in the program actively for 18 years. Hazelle taught the quilting class there for most of those years. She has many quilts that she has made. Hazelle remains an Honorary Board Member of ELM. Hazelle and Oliver served as First Vice Presidents of the Senior Citizens Council in Cobb and were chairpersons for fund raising projects. They were responsible for the success of the Council’s Trash to Treasures program for many years. In 1990 Hazelle and Oliver were named Cobb Seniors of the Year for their many hours of volunteer work in Cobb. Together Hazelle and Oliver were leaders in helping to establish a Senior Center in West Cobb known as Lost Mountain Senior Center/West Cobb Senior Center. Hazelle with Oliver were Charter Members of the Lost Mountain Golden Kiwanis, and very active for many years. Hazelle was preceded in death by her husband, Oliver Braude and great grandson, Tyler Henderson. Survivors are her son, Bob Braude (Marilynn), four granddaughters, MaryBeth Henderson (Chris), Kathleen Delaney (Phil), Colleen George (Jay), Maureen Patrick (Casey), and 10 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 56 Whitlock Ave., Marietta, GA 30064, or the Enrichment of Life Movement.
