Clifford Pickett

Clifford Pickett Sr. the son of James and Lessie Pickett was born on September 28, 1932 in Whigham, GA. He departed this life on July 1, 2014 at Wellstar Tranquility Hospice at Cobb Hospital Austell, GA. Clifford grew up in Cairo, Georgia where he attended Washington High School and was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Clifford entered the Army on January 13, 1953 and was a member of a mobile artillery unit serving with United Nation forces liberating South Korea. He was discharged on October 26, 1954. He received the Korean Services Medal with one Bronze Service Star; United Nations Service Medal; National Defense Service Medal; and Good Conduct Medal. In January of 1953, while Vera Mae Phillips was waiting to get her hair done, she was introduced to Clifford Pickett by Cleaster Akins just outside an upstairs beauty parlor and a downstairs soda shop. Clifford asked for her address and she agreed. Clifford wrote Vera his first letter while servicing in Korea, and the romance began. When Clifford came home from the service, he immediately searched for Vera. Clifford found her at Washington High School and he asked her father’s permission to take her home from school. Clifford was persistent and asked Vera to marry him many times and on March 23, 1956 they were married in the courthouse in Cairo, Georgia … and the rest is history. Clifford was predeceased in death by his adopted parents; James Pickett and Lessie Pickett, biological mother Stella Thomas ; three brothers: Arthur Morrison, Dwight Morrison, James Morrison. Clifford leaves to cherish his memories his loving wife Vera Pickett; one son Clifford Pickett Jr.; two daughters Josephine Daniels and Glendon Nedrick; five grandchildren: Steven Daniels, Jessica Mercer, Natasha Nedrick, Stephanie Daniels, Kyle Pickett; five great grandchildren: Sasha Mercer, Liayana Daniels, Angeliyah Weaver, Makayla Mercer, Kyson Weaver; one brother Jessie Akins; and two sisters Odevia Brown and Francis Johnson.
